Moving a Small Business Website Off WordPress: Every Old URL Kept, Products Edited From a Google Sheet

A Jaipur IT services shop had a WordPress site with 13 plugins, a disabled checkout and 87 real products. We rebuilt it as a fast site whose catalogue the owner edits in a Google Sheet, kept all 130 old URLs working, and removed every plugin to update.

Moving a Small Business Website Off WordPress: Every Old URL Kept, Products Edited From a Google Sheet

Shree Shyam Associate in Jaipur repairs laptops, installs CCTV and networks, and sells IT accessories. Their website ran on WordPress with WooCommerce, Elementor and thirteen plugins, nine of them waiting for updates. When we looked inside, the shop wasn't really a shop: a code snippet had switched off the cart and checkout months earlier, and every 'order' on record was a test. The site was a product catalogue with a WhatsApp button — on a platform built for far more, and needing constant upkeep.

Step 1: take stock before touching anything

We listed every URL the old site served — pages, products, categories, the local service pages like 'CCTV installation in Jaipur' that bring in search traffic, and the leftovers (duplicate copies, a sample page, seven demo grocery products from the theme). That gave us 130 old URLs and 87 real products to carry across.

Step 2: pull the products out cleanly

WooCommerce has a public Store API that returns products as JSON, with names, descriptions, categories and images. One gotcha: prices come back in paise, not rupees, so ₹2,499 arrives as 249900. We downloaded every product image and hosted it with the new site so nothing depended on the old server.

Step 3: let the owner edit products in a Google Sheet

The new site reads its catalogue from a Google Sheet with one row per product: name, category, price, MRP, description, up to four images, in stock, featured, and a Status column where 'Hidden' takes a product off the site. A photo can be a Google Drive share link; the site converts it to a direct image automatically. Change a price in the Sheet and the website shows it within about five minutes.

Step 4: make the Sheet unable to break the site

Pages are built by one small serverless function on Vercel and cached at the edge for five minutes, so visitors are never waiting on Google. If the Sheet can't be read, or suddenly returns zero products, the site falls back to the last good copy of the catalogue instead of showing an empty shop. A response header tells us which source served each page, which makes problems easy to spot.

Search rankings and old WhatsApp shares point at the old addresses, so every one of the 130 URLs either loads the same page or redirects permanently to its new equivalent. On Vercel, one detail cost us time: WordPress addresses end with a slash, and redirect rules only match if they're written with the trailing slash too. We tested every old URL after each deploy.

    What the shop gained

No plugins, no core updates, no database to back up, and nothing for attackers to log in to. Pages load fast on a phone. The enquiry form opens WhatsApp directly, so there's no form server to fail. The existing Google tag carried over, so analytics continue unbroken. And the owner updates stock and prices in a spreadsheet they already know how to use.

When WordPress is still the right choice

If you publish a lot of articles with several writers, or you need a real checkout with payments, inventory and accounts, WordPress or Shopify earns its upkeep. If your website is really a catalogue plus a phone number, a Sheet-driven site is cheaper to run and much harder to break. Moving domains off Hostinger? Frequently asked questions

Can I manage my website's products from a Google Sheet?

Yes. The site reads the Sheet, with one row per product (name, price, images, stock, status), and shows changes within a few minutes. A cached copy keeps the site working if the Sheet is ever unavailable.

Will moving off WordPress hurt my Google rankings?

Not if every old URL either loads the same content or permanently redirects to its new address, and the sitemap is resubmitted in Search Console. We test every old URL after each deploy.

How do I export products from WooCommerce?

The WooCommerce Store API returns products as JSON with names, descriptions, categories and images. Note that its prices are in paise, not rupees.

When should a business stay on WordPress?

If you publish many articles with several writers, or need a full checkout with payments and customer accounts. A catalogue with an enquiry button is usually simpler, cheaper and safer as a Sheet-driven site.
