HowAutomate Tools: 55+ Free, Privacy-First Tools for Indian Businesses — Including In-Browser AI
Our own public tools site — GST invoice, quotation and challan generators, salary slip, rent receipt, a full PDF toolkit, exam photo resizers, and AI background and watermark removal — built to run in the browser so personal and financial data never touches a server.

The Challenge
Small Indian businesses and salaried employees regularly need the same handful of documents — a GST invoice, a salary slip, rent receipts for HRA, a merged or split PDF. The popular free sites either upload your files to their servers, add watermarks, gate downloads behind sign-ups, or get Indian specifics wrong (CGST/SGST vs IGST, lakh/crore amount-in-words, the landlord-PAN rule).
What We Built
We built tools.howautomate.com as a single-page React app where every document tool runs fully client-side: PDFs are merged, split and compressed with pdf-lib in the browser, and invoices, payslips and rent receipts are rendered as print-ready pages saved via the browser's own Save-as-PDF — so GSTINs, PANs, bank details and salaries never leave the device. The only server-backed tool, the file converter, runs through a self-hosted n8n workflow. Tool metadata lives in one file that drives the home page, footer and structured data, and every money calculation is shared code with unit tests.
How It Works
The design principle was 'nothing to trust us with'. For a GST invoice or a salary slip, the safest server is no server: the form state lives in the page, the preview is a styled HTML document, and printing to PDF happens in the browser. We use a print-only stylesheet so the site's own chrome disappears from the output, and set the document title during printing so the saved file is named after the invoice or employee rather than the website.
Indian specifics are handled properly, not approximately. Amounts in words use the lakh/crore system with paise computed in integer arithmetic to avoid floating-point drift. The GST maths splits CGST and SGST per paisa so the halves always add up to the GST line, while IGST is rounded once. The rent receipt generator applies the ₹1 lakh landlord-PAN rule and the cash revenue-stamp convention, clamps receipt dates to each month's length, and prints two receipts per A4 page. The salary slip has a one-click EPF fill (12% of Basic, ₹15,000 wage ceiling).
Correctness is tested where it matters. The shared money, GST and date helpers and the PDF page-range parser are covered by unit tests — the parser's tests exist because a real bug once made selected pages silently vanish. Printed output is checked by rendering pages to PDF headlessly and counting pages, and PDF tools were verified by asserting on the actual output files.
SEO is built in, not bolted on: each tool has its own title, canonical URL, WebApplication and FAQ structured data, a sitemap entry and an llms.txt description, and routes are code-split so the home page loads only what it needs. We also fixed a subtle bug where a popular head-management library silently dropped titles and structured data from lazily-loaded routes, by replacing it with a small in-house component.
The suite has since grown well beyond invoices. There is a full PDF toolkit (edit existing text in place, compress to an exact size like 100 KB, merge, split, organise, rotate, page numbers, watermark, PDF to and from images), photo and signature resizers set to the official limits for IBPS, NEET, JEE Main and SSC — each number checked against the official notice — quotation, proforma and delivery challan generators, and QR code makers. Every page is pre-rendered as static HTML with its own FAQ and structured data, and the site has a plain-language terms page making clear the tools are for genuine, lawful use.
Three tools use real AI without any API. A background remover and passport photo maker run MODNet and the UltraFace face detector, and a watermark remover runs the MI-GAN inpainting model — all open-source, executed in the visitor's browser with ONNX Runtime Web. Heavy inference runs in a Web Worker so the page never freezes, and the watermark pages enable multi-threaded WebAssembly, roughly halving processing time. There is no per-image cost, and photos never leave the device.
For HowAutomate, the tools do double duty: they're genuinely useful on their own, and they introduce Indian business owners — exactly the people who later need invoicing, payroll or order processing automated end-to-end — to the way we build.
